about us

Independent Tennis was founded by Monica and Rafa (not Nadal). They’re both fantastic tennis coaches and want as many children as possible to play tennis, a sport they love. That’s why they’ve teamed up and created the Independent Tennis programme, open to all.

It's fun learning together!

They have enormous expertise, experience and enthusiasm. No child could wish to work with better coaches. They know the game inside out and how to teach it to youngsters. With their help, countless young tennis players have transformed themselves from beginners to winners.

Who Runs the Programme?

Monica and Rafa lead the team that deliver the programme – all like-minded tennis professionals, coaches and assistants, specialising in junior tennis development who they have worked with during their many years in the sport.

Monica Becerra
LTA Level 5 Performance Coach Award

I have been involved in tennis for over 25 years, coaching in park development programmes, commercial tennis clubs, high performance and International High Performance Centres (IHPCs).

I aim to make daily self improvements and in so doing help those around me to improve. On my journey I have played a role in helping players achieve their goals, ranging from winning national titles to low-key local team events. I have run programmes for players just starting tennis through to training high performance athletes. I am also Middlesex Girls Under 10 & Under 12 Team Captain.

On a personal level I love tennis and compete regularly. I have represented England, Middlesex and Surrey. Recently I was a finalist in the National Veterans event for my age group.

Independent Tennis is a way for me to share my passion for tennis and increase the opportunities for new players to play this great sport.

Rafael Zurita
LTA Level 4 Senior Performance Coach

The core of my coaching skills were learnt in the USA where I did a Bachelor in Physical Education and then a Masters degree in Behavioral Science.

I also competed there as a player. Over more than 10 years I’ve developed a coaching style which inspires players and helps them achieve. I’ve a wide range of experience coaching different players, from beginners through to professional tennis athlete. My approach includes using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), video analysis and biomechanical aspects. My players set specific and measurable goals, achieve them and have fun in the process!

I’m enthusiastic and highly motivated. As a result, I expect the highest standards possible from myself, both on and off the court, and in turn from those that I teach. This works at many levels. I love to see players improve. Seeing the pleasure that tennis can bring, and being a part of it, is very satisfying. Right now, I’m really enjoying the challenge of bringing more players into the game through Independent Tennis. It’s a terrific gig!
